Poverty Exemption Procedures

In accordance with MCL 211.7, Handy Township established their poverty guidelines for 2011. Any property owner that is receiving the Principal Residence Exemption can apply for a one year exemption from paying property taxes. In order to qualify you must meet the guidelines that the Township has adopted. These include specific income levels and asset tests of the total household. The applications, income levels and asset test requirements can be obtained from the Assessor who will then work with you to see if you meet the qualifications. Completed applications are then forwarded to the Board of Review for action during their March, July and December meetings.
